Adding a new skincare product to your daily routine should be pretty easy right? Well, not always, especially if you have reactive skin that doesn’t always take well to just any skincare product.
It’s also not just sensitive skin types that need to be mindful of adding new skincare products. If you have dry skin or acne-prone skin, some products and ingredients can potentially trigger breakouts or make dry patches worse.
And with skincare trends constantly popping up on socials it can be easy to fall for the newest skincare trend, but they don’t always apply to all skin types. While the newest exfoliant on the market may be a hit on TikTok it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll work the same for you as it does for others. Always consider your specific skin concern and skin type.
That doesn’t mean you can’t add a single new product to your routine. You can always test out a new product first before making it a staple in your routine.
How to test a new product
It can be exciting to try a new product, but you don’t want to overdo it either. If you have a couple of skincare products in mind that you want to try out, start off slow. Introduce one new product at a time and give yourself some time with that one product before adding anything else to your routine.
Patch test new skincare products
Once you’ve determined that a skincare product suits your skin concern and skin type, you can test it out on your arm before adding it to your routine. Apply the normal amount of the product to the underside of your arm once or twice daily for at least a week just to see how it reacts with your skin. This will help you determine whether you can add it to your routine or not.
Make sure the new product fits in your routine
Even if a new product doesn’t trigger any reactions, you still also need to consider what’s in the rest of your routine. For example, if you’re looking to add a retinoid in your routine, just make sure to not use it at the same time as your exfoliant with AHAs and/or BHA.
Some actives can be too strong to use together and may cause irritation and/or dryness. But, you could adopt a skin cycling routine in which you apply retinoid one night and your exfoliant another night, with time for recovery in between.
This goes for any new product you want to add in your routine. Make sure to check out the ingredients to ensure they’ll work well with the rest of your skincare routine.
Wait before adding a new product
Once you’ve gone through all the hoops of testing a new product, you can safely add it into your routine. But, just because one product proved to work well for your skin, you should still give your skin some time to adjust to it. Then, if you’re looking to add another new product try to give yourself ample time between trying this new product (like about a month at least).
Hanhoo Newness
Looking for something new? Our newest addition to the Hanhoo lineup includes our Pore Cleanser and Pore Serum, both with the hero ingredient Niacinamide. This micro collection is best for congested skin with clogged pores, especially for those with oily or combination skin.
The Pore Cleanser with Niacinamide foams up to a bubby consistency to help lift and remove pore debris like dirt and oil. Plus, you can leave it on for up to 5 minutes and use it as a mask for that extra deep clean.
The Pore Serum with Niacinamide is a non-sticky serum that helps keep pores clean and clear of pore-clogging impurities. And, if you’re not a fan of sticky, thick textures of some serums, not to worry, our serum is super lightweight and blends into the skin easily.
This collection was formulated with pore-friendly ingredients like Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid to help improve the look of clogged pores and keep debris from getting trapped in them. Keeping up with your pore care can help lessen the appearance of large pores too, but only if you’re consistent!
