When dealing with a couple different skin concerns, it can be tricky to figure out how to layer all the products in your skin care routine especially when it comes to skin care products like blemish patches.

Blemish patches aren’t exactly a set step in your daily routine. One of the benefits of blemish patches is that you can conveniently apply them on a pimple anytime and anywhere as a pimple pops up. But if you are applying one overnight during your nighttime skincare routine or even during your morning routine, there are some do’s and don'ts when applying a blemish patch.

Do’s and don’ts of blemish patches

When applying a blemish patch it’s best to apply them on clean, dry skin. Applying them on clean, dry skin best ensures that they’ll stick well on the pimple and stay on for the next 6 to 8 hours. That also means it’ll be one of the first steps in your skincare routine. So right after cleansing the skin and once the skin is dry you can apply the patch right over the pimple.

Among the crucial “don’ts” when it comes to using blemish patches is that you should not mix them with other skincare products. So while you may think that adding a cream spot treatment on a pimple and applying a blemish patch right on top is going to speed up the blemish healing process, it really may end up making the situation worse.

That’s why we advise to apply the patch on clean skin. If you add a strong spot treatment with a blemish patch, you can end up causing dryness and irritation, making the pimple look a little worse than when you started.

You also don’t want to wait until the end of your routine to apply a blemish patch. Applying products like serums or a moisturizer before a blemish patch may not allow the patch to adhere well to the skin.

Adding blemish patches to your routine

If you have oily skin then you may deal with a couple different skin concerns from acne to clogged pores and blackheads. So if this describes you, then check out our skin care routine recs for this skin type:

Step 1: Pore Cleanser

As typical with any AM or PM routine, start by cleansing the skin. Our Pore Cleanser with Niacinamide helps clear away pore-clogging elements like dirt, oil, and dead skin. And, as a little bonus, you can apply the cleanser and leave it on the skin for 3 to 5 minutes to give the skin a deeper clean.

Made with Niacinamide and Salicylic Acid, the Pore Cleanser works to break up pore gunk and keep pores clean to help control clogged pores and even breakouts.

Step 2: Blemish Patches

After drying the skin, you can apply a blemish patch to pimples as needed. Or, if you are looking to target clogged pores on larger areas like the t-zone, you can use the T-Zone Pore Patch on the nose, chin, or forehead to help absorb excess oil and minimize any pimples on the t-zone.

The blemish patches use hydrocolloid material to help absorb the gunk in pimples or pores over the course of 6 to 8 hours, and that’s usually why you’ll see “white” stuff on patches.

Step 3: Pore Serum

Once you have your blemish patches applied, you can now move on to the rest of your routine. In this step, to better target clogged pores, apply our Pore Serum with Niacinamide to help improve the look of congested skin and large pores.

Made with Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, and Glycolic Acid to help give the skin a gentle exfoliation deep in the pores and on the surface of the skin to keep pores clear of pore-clogging gunk.

Step 4: Dermafix Moisturizer

Finish off your routine with our Dermafix Moisturizer with Green Tea. Even oily skin needs to be kept adequately moisturized if you want to avoid the overproduction of sebum. Without a dedicated moisturizer, if your skin experiences dryness it can overproduce oils as a response.

Made with Green Tea and Calamine, the Dermafix Moisturizer helps hydrate the skin while also keeping excess oiliness at bay, perfect for oily and combination skin types.

Lastly…

If you have any additional steps in your routine, always remember that blemish patches go right after your cleanser to best stick to your skin and tackle any blemishes. And be sure to avoid mixing your topicals with your blemish patches.
